Objective :speech fluency test(VFT) and near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS) were used to investigate the effects of Baduanjin mind-body(BDM) exercise on the cognitive performance and brain function in elderly adults. Methods: A total of 29 healthy elderly people participated in this experiment, 14 subjects who practiced Baduanjin for a long time were assigned to the BDM group, and 15 subjects who did not practice Baduanjin were assigned to the control group. All subjects completed the verbal fluency test(VFT) respectively. We measured oxy-hemoglobin concentration(oxy-Hb) in the prefrontal area using NIRS during VFT, and investigated the relationship between oxy-Hb changes and task performance. Results: The behavioral data showed that the performance of VFT in the BDM group was better than the control group.NIRS data analysis showed that the increase of oxy-Hb in prefrontal lobe brain regions in BDM group was better than control group. Conclusions: Baduanjin exercise has a positive effect on cognitive performance and brain function of the elderly, which can be achieved by improving language task performance and activating prefrontal lobe.
