Vocal communication is an indispensable behavior of some animals. Acoustic signals are used in the identification of species or relatives, avoidance of predation, sexual selection, territorial defense and communication between parents and offspring. Felids have a unique vocalization repertoire for communication. Yet there has been little research on the vocal communication of felids and there is a lack of a systematic summary of this subject. We reviewed research on felid vocal communication, focusing on four aspects. Here we discuss potential challenges in this research, including the classification of vocalization, the development of the vocalization, the morphology of the vocal organs, and the functions of vocalization. Our objective was to provide reference for the future study of felid vocal communication and behavior. We found that there has been little basic research on the vocalization of felids, and it focused on three species, viz. domestic cat( Felis catus),cheetah( Acinonyx jubatus) and lion( Panthera leo). The researches about the functions of felid vocalization are rare. More research is needed in the future to explore the vocal communication and the intra-and inter-species interactions of felids.
