Objective The aim of this study was to examine whether sleep duration is related to MS among adults in Chengdu. Methods A total of 1,274 adults aged 20-70 years were randomly selected. The nocturnal sleep duration(NSD) was determined according to the answer to the question, "On average, how long do you usually sleep per night?" The nap time of subjects were collected according to the answer by the question, "How many days do you have a nap in a week and how long do you sleep for a nap?" International Diabetes Federation defined MS according to the criterion. Results The incidence rate of MS in young, middle-aged and elder adults were approximately 13.8%, 36.4% and 40.7%, respectively. After adjustment for potential confounders, OR(95% CI) of NSD <6 hours group was significantly associated with an increased risk of MS, central obesity among middle-aged adults OR: 1.81(1.16, 2.82), 1.67(1.05, 2.70). Napped <1 hour was significantly associated with a decreased risk of raised BP and raised FPG among middle-aged adults OR: 0.64(0.42, 0.92), 0.60(0.40, 0.90). Conclusion The prevalence of MS increased with age. Individuals with short NSD had higher risk of MS, and appropriate daytime napping was associated with a decreased prevalence of raised BP and raised FPG among middle-aged adults in Chengdu.
