Based on the results of a questionnaire survey combined with interviews, this article examines the consumption of new media among Chinese students in contemporary Europe. The findings show that social media are the most frequently-used new media among those Chinese students. A majority of the students continue their habits and consume Chinese-language media more than the media of their host countries. However, the media content that they consume is part of the globalized media. On the one hand, social media functions positively in the sense of helping Chinese students ease culture shock and adapt to their new life at an early stage. On the other hand, it also excludes Chinese students from local cultures and thus prevents them from integrating into the host societies.
